The Vacancy

The Bar Council represents the nearly 17,000 barristers in England and Wales. It promotes the Bar's high quality specialist advocacy and advisory services; fair access to justice for all; the highest standards of ethics, equality and diversity across the profession; and the development of business opportunities for barristers at home and abroad.

The Bar Council is the governing body and the Approved Regulator for the Bar of England and Wales. It discharges its regulatory functions through the independent Bar Standards Board.

The Bar Council is looking to recruit an International Policy and Programme Manager to work as part of a small policy team, with the supervision of the Head of International, to (i) lead on developing and delivering key Bar Council project work relating to the international interests of the Bar (ii) supporting other policy and project work across the Bar as appropriate (iii) supporting the Ethical Enquiries Service by answering ethical queries.

Responsibilities of the role include;

  • Supporting the strategic aims and objectives of the Bar Council;
  • Management of programmes that support the Bar Council's reputation as a quality service provider and (where appropriate) generate income for the Bar Council;
  • Maintaining internal and external stakeholder relationships.
  • Supporting Heads of Policy and Designated Committee(s).
  • Manage the Ethical Guidance Helpline by providing timely, trusted and expert advice.

We are looking for a candidate with experience of working within the domestic/international legal and business communities, drafting policies, running programmes, building networks and stakeholder management within a similar organisation.
