Role Title: Unix Engineer
Location: Hybrid (60% Remote/40% Sheffield)
Rate: £400 per day (Inside IR35) Umbrella only
About the role:
The Managed File Transmission Team is responsible for managing file transfers for both internal and external customers via shared file gateways across different platforms, products, technology, and standards supporting all lines of businesses.
The team supports several technologies that provide highly reliable, resilient; and secure services. The team is responsible for all aspects of the project life cycle ensuring that Bank policies, guidelines, governance; and standards are defined where necessary and followed. Team members are also expected to explore new processes and procedures. Continually seek improvement of themselves and the File Transmissions Domain globally by closely working with the MFT Engineering Team.
The role will work with senior leaders to deliver complex, enterprise-level initiatives that are integral to the Bank's overall strategic direction. The Technical Leader will drive key Infrastructure Services strategies for self-service infrastructure, self-healing for infrastructure break fix, fully automated governance, and drive towards a future state of immutable infrastructure.
They will cross and merge the barriers that exist between software development, testing and operations teams and keep existing networks in mind as they design, plan and test. The role will help to design and develop infrastructure code, to support continuous delivery and continuous integration processes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Hands-on experience with installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and administration patching of middle tier applications on Linux environment.
- Storage configuration on Unix/Linux, as per group standard (preferable on RHEL 6/7/8).
- Install and configuration of Veritas Cluster Server, as per group standard.
- Actively participate in Projects, to implement new tools and automate processes.
- Provide consultancy support to improve resilience, then implement approved recommendations.
- Weekend, overnight and Production support work may be required according to project releases, vulnerability patching schedules, and OS migrations.
- Work with Application teams for Observability setup for their applications and Infrastructure that will include Dashboards, Visualisation, monitoring and provide consultancy on Self-Healing solutions for Applications.
- Knowledge on Observability tools like Spunk, AppDynamics and ThousandEyes.
- Seek opportunities through Scripting automated deployments, to reduce operational tasks. Seek opportunities for integration of Splunk with other monitoring tools.
- Effectively communicate tool capabilities and processes to varying stakeholders.
- Adhere to policies, procedures, and control requirements applicable to day-to-day working, exceptional and project activities, and raise any concerns about actual or potential issues promptly, in line with reporting and escalation procedures.
- Apply policies, procedures, practices, and standards to their allocated tasks, taking responsibility for their own actions, to ensure the achievement of high levels of quality, effective risk management and regulatory compliance.
Key skills and experience:
- Over 8 years working experience as a Linux System Administrator.
- Red Hat Enterprise (ideally RHEL 8.x/RHEL 7.x/RHEL 6.x) is a must.
- Veritas Foundation Suite minimum 5 years or InfoScale.
- Veritas Cluster Server minimum 5 years or InfoScale.
- SAN and NAS exposure on Enterprise storage arrays such as EMC VMAX and NetApp's NAS.
- LVM configuration or Logic Volume Manager.
- Experience and knowledge with virtualization platform such as VMWare.
- Experience of using ServiceNow, Confluence, Jira is preferred.
- Good working knowledge of at least one Scripting language.
- Excellent problem-solving and effective communication skills.
- Strong knowledge of Operating Systems (including Linux and Windows) and networking fundamentals are required.
- Desirable to have skills in Ansible, Puppet, Oracle, and experience in Storage Management.
- Able to update technical documentation.
- Ability to work independently, multi-task, and take ownership of various parts of a project or initiative.
- Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, to be able to deal with and form good relationships with the Business and other Technology groups through day-to-day support and project work.
