£24,303 Actual Salary

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of autistic young people? St. John's College in Brighton is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Tutor to join our team. We are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive learning environment where every student can thrive.

About St John's College

St. John's is a non-maintained specialist provision, working with autistic people, the majority of whom also have learning disabilities. Some of our learners have co-occurring conditions such as epilepsy, hearing or visual impairments, or mental health needs. We also support autistic learners who have an additional profile of Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) syndrome.

Each learner's curriculum is shaped by their individual strengths, interests, and challenges. St. John's is awarded with Autism Accreditation by the National Autistic Society (NAS). We support our learners to develop their skills in the NAS's four focus areas of:

  • Difference in social communication and interaction
  • Self-reliance and problem-solving
  • Sensory
  • Emotional Well-being

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pastoral Care & Wellbeing: Take a lead role in the overall pastoral care and wellbeing of learners within your tutor group, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment.
  • Personal Development & Educational Progress: Champion the personal development, behavior, welfare, and educational progress of individual tutees, tailoring support to meet their unique needs.
  • Team Management: Manage a team of Learning Support Workers (LSWs), fostering a collaborative and positive working environment.
  • Team Player: Function as a cohesive team player, contributing to a supportive and dynamic educational community.
  • Adherence to Policies: Follow set work rules, procedures, and practices to maintain a consistent and effective educational environment.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Experience & Passion: Demonstrated experience in working with autistic young people and a genuine passion for supporting their development.
  • Leadership Skills: Strong leadership abilities to effectively manage and inspire a team of LSWs.
  • Empathy & Patience: Exceptional empathy, patience, and understanding to address the unique challenges faced by our learners.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adapt teaching methods and approaches to cater to individual needs and learning styles.
  • Professionalism: Commitment to adhering to established rules, procedures, and practices within an educational setting
