Job Description

In Place of War is a global organisation that uses creativity in places impacted by conflict and climate change as a tool for positive change. We enable grassroots change-makers in music, theatre and across the arts to transform a culture of violence and suffering into hope, opportunity and freedom. In Place of War started in 2004 as a research project at the University of Manchester. Initial research findings spurred practical projects and programming. Twenty years later, In Place of War works with a change-maker network of 130 creative organisations across 30 countries, all making lasting change in their communities.

Current trustees:

In Place of War has a dynamic Board of trustees from the arts, cultural, international development and business sectors, led by Sir. Richard Mantle.

As a Trustee, you will:

  • Contribute to the strategic direction and decision-making of In Place of War.
  • Ensure the organisation remains financially sustainable and complies with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Use your networks, experience, and expertise to help the organisation grow and reach new audiences.
  • Support fundraising efforts and advocate for the organisation's mission.
  • Provide guidance on key initiatives and partnerships, particularly those that align with In Place of War's vision of leveraging the arts for social impact.
  • Attend Board meetings, remote and in-person (approximately 4 times a year) and contribute to sub-committees as appropriate.

We are particularly seeking Trustees with experience in one or more of following areas:

  • Fundraising & Partnerships: Proven ability to fundraise and cultivate relationships with potential donors, funders, and partners.
  • International Development: Experience working with NGOs or initiatives focused on international development, human rights, or global social impact.
  • Finance & Governance: Experience in financial oversight, governance, and strategic planning.
  • Arts & Culture: A background in the arts, music, or cultural development, particularly in conflict zones or underserved communities.

Skills & Attributes:

  • A passion for social justice, creative expression, and community-led change.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • An understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Experience in a governance role or a strong willingness to learn and contribute to the governance of a growing organisation.

What We Offer:

  • The opportunity to play a key role in the development of an impactful global organisation.
  • A chance to make a difference in the lives of artists and communities in conflict-affected areas.
  • Networking and learning opportunities with a diverse and dedicated group of individuals.
