Job Description
Software Application Manager (m/f/d) in the bioinformatics industry Job description

The Software Application Manager (m/f/d) is part of a team that is responsible for making changes to installations of our Scionics software products. The associated tasks include all steps that take place after software production, e.g. installations, updates, changing configurations and data imports. The responsible team carries out these tasks with the help of automation, for which specially developed or open source tools are used. The tools are also used in this position. The Software Application Manager (m/f/d) shares these responsibilities with other members of the team. In addition, the Software Application Manager (m/f/d) advises our customers' IT departments on installation requirements and proposals.

With the goal of enabling a functioning software installation, this position utilizes knowledge from various disciplines. If you aspire to become a Linux System Administrator (m/f/d), work in DevOps or as a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE), you will find touchpoints to all of these areas in the position. As the position requires a mix of different skills, we assume that no candidate (m/f/d) will have all the skills, but that Scionics will train you for the position.

It should be mentioned that not all working time needs to be spent on updating and installing our software, as our processes are automated. At a certain point, this part of the work will become routine. Therefore, it is our intention that the position will provide time for further training as well as the opportunity to improve the automation scripts and/or develop new ideas on how to better test and ensure that installations and updates were successful and run properly. In the medium term, this position should further develop the methods we have used so far to take them to the next level.

This is a full-time position in the hybrid model, the salary is based on professional experience. The team mostly works remotely, but occasionally comes to the Dresden office for scheduled meetings to develop ideas and conduct training together.

Tasks
  • Using Python and Bash scripts to make changes to Scionics product installations:
    • Install and update
    • Changing configurations
    • Cloning software instances
    • Data imports
  • Configuring dependencies for product installations:
    • Set up/configure Apache
    • Set up/configure MySQL/MariaDB
    • Set up/configure other dependencies (e.g. the operating system) as required
  • Communicating with our customers' IT departments (mostly German-speaking) when new servers for our software need to be installed, upgraded or reconfigured there
    • Advice on hardware specifications and server configurations
    • Advice in the event of problems that may occur after an installation
Your profile
  • Good, general knowledge of Linux and how services work
  • Initial experience with virtualization and containers, e.g. Docker, VMWare, Proxmox, Kubernetes etc.
  • Already some experience working with Git
  • A careful and conscientious working style with an eye for detail
  • Fluency in German and very good knowledge of English
  • You are customer-oriented, communicative, able to work under pressure and enjoy teamwork
  • You are willing to continuously develop your skills through training and courses
What we offer
  • A friendly and international team
  • Flat hierarchies and an open communication style
  • Continuing education through training and specialist conferences
  • Flexible working hours with home office options
  • Spacious workstations, kitchen and free coffee
  • Easily accessible office, good local transport connections, lunch options, post office and grocery store within short walking distance
