Job Description

Employment Lawyer

The Role

You will be responsible for managing your own expanding portfolio of clients while playing an essential role in driving the development and growth of our client's business. You will work autonomously to provide pragmatic and commercially focused employment law and HR advice to both large-scale and SME clients across the UK. This is a hands-on role requiring strong expertise in employment law and a passion for business development, as you will actively contribute to enhancing the service offering and growing the client base.

About You

You'll thrive in a small business, working independently to provide non-contentious, preventative employment law advice. You will be adept at managing a substantial client portfolio and providing end-to-end employment law support.

You will also be comfortable taking the lead on securing new business, with a proven track record in winning new clients and maintaining long-term relationships, as well as effectively managing a growing book of business. You will therefore play a pivotal role in maintaining existing clients and driving new business opportunities, ensuring that your contribution supports the continued growth of our client's business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Client Management: Accountable for managing a portfolio of approximately 30 existing clients, providing end-to-end employment law advice on a range of issues including disciplinary matters, grievances, sickness absence, redundancies, TUPE transfers, and settlement agreements.
  • Client Renewals and Retention: Ensure high client retention through exceptional service, managing the renewal process in good time and developing long-term relationships.
  • Business Development: Actively seek and secure new clients for the business and identify and act upon opportunities for growth and expansion of services.
  • Employment Law Support: Provide practical, commercially focused advice to clients, resolving queries efficiently and helping them navigate complex HR and employment law challenges.
  • Document Drafting: Draft, update, and review contracts of employment, employee handbooks, and policies to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  • Training Delivery: Design and deliver high-quality training on employment law and HR topics, including employment law updates and tailored sessions for line managers.
  • Compliance and Marketing: Stay informed on changes in employment legislation, ensure advice is current, and contribute to marketing efforts through articles and blogs.
  • Records Management: Maintain accurate records of advice and support provided.
  • You will have both new business and client retention targets to achieve.

What We're Looking For

  • A qualified employment lawyer, senior HR professional, or experienced employment law paralegal with a minimum of 5 years' experience advising on all employment law matters.
  • LLB Law degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Proven experience in both business development and employment law advice, with a demonstrated ability to win new clients and provide ongoing support to existing clients.
  • Strong commercial acumen and a proactive approach to identifying new business opportunities.
  • Exceptional client service skills, with a proven track record of maintaining high retention rates and client satisfaction.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an eye for detail and the ability to influence and engage at all levels.
  • Comfortable in delivering training sessions to large audiences on employment law and HR topics.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple clients and tasks simultaneously.
  • An agile team player with a hands-on, flexible approach, comfortable working in a small business environment.
  • A commitment to confidentiality and continuous learning in employment law and HR.

The Offer

  • Competitive salary based on skills, experience, and value added to our client's service offering and business growth. Our client is interested in hearing from a wide range of candidates currently earning between £34,000 and £52,000.
  • 22 days holiday plus bank holidays.
  • Required to travel to Leeds for monthly internal meetings and to client meetings (predominantly across the M62 corridor, occasional travel to London/Midlands).
  • Full-time hours are 37.5 per week, worked 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, over 5 days. Part-time/reduced hours available for the right candidate over a minimum of 4 days per week.

This role offers the best of both worlds: the opportunity to lead business development initiatives and grow the client base while also being deeply involved in providing expert, day-to-day employment law advice. If you're ready for a varied, client-facing role where you can make a real impact in a small, growing business, then apply today.

If you have experience as a Senior Employment Law Consultant, Senior Employment Lawyer, Employment Law Consultant or HR Consultant then we would like to hear from you.
