Introduction

The Chamber and Participation Team (CPT) brings together all the disciplines that support the House of Commons Chamber within one coherent structure - the procedural offices that facilitate the core function of legislating, the operational teams who focus on ensuring that the Chamber runs effectively and efficiently, and the public-facing Participation teams who promote Parliament's role and seek to engage citizens across the UK with parliamentary business.

The Role

The Senior Education and Engagement Outreach Officer (Yorkshire and the Humber) role engages and educates the public through face to face and digital delivery.

Location: The post holder must live within the region of Yorkshire and the Humber. The whole of the Yorkshire and the Humber region will be covered by this role but due to population density it is likely there will be higher levels of delivery in the areas of Leeds, Sheffield and Hull. The post-holder must be willing to travel regularly, including frequent overnight stays in the region and Westminster.

The holder of this exciting position will establish opportunities to deliver inspiring and informative outreach sessions to a range of community and school audiences. There is a particular focus on working with schools, delivering assemblies about how UK Parliament works and how young people can engage with it. The community work will be primarily with adult audiences who have barriers to accessing political engagement.

Some of the responsibilities for this role include:

  • To organise and deliver engaging sessions about the work of the UK Parliament to schools, colleges and community groups.
  • To contribute to the expansion of the outreach programme within Yorkshire and the Humber by; building new, and maintaining existing links with; schools, colleges and community groups, and identifying new opportunities for engagement by arranging and attending meetings with contacts.
  • To take part in CPD, training and team meetings with colleagues, to ensure up-to-date knowledge and understanding of Parliament.
  • To liaise with key stakeholders including MPs, Peers and their staff as appropriate.

Skills and Experience

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:

  • Excellent oral communication, presentation and facilitation skills.
  • An ability to network, with a proven track record of initiating and maintaining effective working relationships with schools, third sector bodies and networks, campaigning organisations, or community groups in Yorkshire and the Humber.
  • An understanding and knowledge of working across an education setting or communities setting.
