Job Description

Could you be a Co-op Member Nominated Director?

Co-op was founded in 1844 and 180 years on, our purpose is more relevant than ever: we exist to meet the needs of our member-owners and everything we do is to build more value for them every day. We're not owned by shareholders or wealthy individuals - our 6 million members own us and have a say in how our business is run, including picking their leaders from our membership to represent their interests on our Board and our National Members' Council.

As a Member Nominated Director, you'll be one of four directors directly elected by our member-owners. Our Board is responsible for setting the strategic direction of our Co-op and is accountable to our members for the performance of our businesses. This is no ordinary non-executive role - you will work closely with our member-owners' representatives on our 100 strong National Members' Council and engage with them directly throughout the year too.

As we enter the second UN International Year of Co-ops and with a government commitment to double the co-operative sector, it's a really exciting time for us to demonstrate the power of co-operation and a different way of doing business.

To be considered for the role, you'll need to have been a Co-op Member-Owner for at least three years and have spent £500 or more with Co-op in 2024. This membership criteria may be waived for very strong candidates. We are looking for passionate member-owners who are inclusive and credible leaders with a strong commercial track record and growth mindset. You'll need to demonstrate a clear commitment and understanding of co-operative business models and our unique values and principles. Our Co-op was founded on principles of equality and equity, and we continue to lead the way on social mobility, inclusion and belonging, so all directors are expected to champion and be a role model for equality and diversity too.

If you're successful in our selection process, you'll join a small number of candidates on our election ballot. If you're elected, you'll be appointed after our Annual General Meeting (AGM) in May 2025 for a three-year term.

The closing date for applications is 31 January 2025. This time, there are two Member Nominated Director seats up for election.
