Job Description
Mechanical Design Engineer - £45,000 - £50,000

Job Summary:
We are working with one of the UK's leading manufacturers of large optics and optical systems, specialising in the manufacture of metre class, precision optical components and the design and verification of complex optic systems. We are seeking a Design Engineer to join our team and work with our commercial customers to create designs and technical documentation for complex optical systems, including opto-mechanical and structural assemblies.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
• Develop design solutions tailored to customer requirements
• Utilise finite element analysis to verify the structural and opto-mechanical integrity of designs
• Participate in design problem-solving activities, providing specialist expertise as needed
• Provide and communicate design review reports in accordance with internal procedures
• Develop and maintain technical documentation, including drawings, BOMs, and assembly instructions
• Collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders to understand, confirm, and deliver technical requirements
• Attend regular project meetings to establish work programs, customer requirements, and technical specifications
• Contribute to design review activities for customer and internal projects
• Produce and verify design drawings and assemblies in accordance with relevant engineering standards (e.g., BS 8888, ISO 10110)
• Support the next generation of Design Engineers through training and professional development
• Travel to customer sites as part of projects

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:
• Educated to a degree level or higher in a physical science or engineering discipline
• Experience working in a specialist optical engineering environment
• Understanding of geometrical and wave optics
• Good understanding of measurement uncertainties and experimental statistics, and experience applying this understanding to experimental setups
• Familiarity with scientific analysis software and/or programming (e.g., Excel, MATLAB, Python, ImageJ)
• Excellent communication and organisational skills
• Ability to work flexibly and meet tight deadlines, both independently and as part of a team
• High-level IT skills

• 37-hour working week, with the option to work these hours over either 4 or 5 days
• 6 weeks annual leave allowance
