Job Description

Dunbar Education is partnering with a supportive SEN school to recruit a committed Maths Teacher. This special school provides tailored education for up to 40 pupils aged 11 to 16 with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, as well as additional challenges such as dyslexia, ADHD, ASD, and social communication difficulties. These pupils often come from disrupted educational backgrounds, including poor attendance and exclusion from mainstream settings, making this an ideal role for an educator looking to make a significant impact on students who need it most.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver Maths lessons that are differentiated and accessible, catering to various learning styles and abilities.
  • Develop and adapt lesson plans that engage and support SEMH pupils, fostering confidence and a positive attitude toward learning.
  • Create a safe, structured learning environment, where students feel supported to express themselves and tackle challenging topics.
  • Use a range of teaching techniques to make Maths relevant and relatable, helping students build practical skills they can use outside of the classroom.
  • Implement behavioural management strategies that encourage self-discipline and cooperation, using a restorative approach to address challenging behaviours.
  • Regularly assess and report on student progress, setting achievable targets and celebrating successes to build students' self-esteem.
  • Work closely with support staff and specialists, including SENCOs, to ensure students' academic, social, and emotional needs are met.
  • Engage parents, carers, and external agencies in supporting pupils' educational journeys, contributing to Individual Education Plans (IEPs) as needed.
  • Inspire and motivate students, helping them to see their potential and encouraging resilience and perseverance in their studies.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in Maths, or a UK equivalent qualification.
  • Previous experience with SEN or SEMH pupils is ideal but not essential; a genuine interest and empathy for students with additional needs are key.
  • Strong classroom management skills, with the ability to implement positive behaviour support strategies.
  • Creative and flexible teaching style, adapting methods to meet students' needs and make learning enjoyable.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, fostering relationships with pupils, parents, and colleagues.
  • Patience, empathy, and resilience, understanding the importance of a calm, positive approach in the face of challenging behaviours.

Why Join?
