Health Physics Technician

The principal duty of the ILL health physics technicians within the Health Physics group of the SRSE is to ensure provision of radiation protection for staff working on ILL's High-Flux Reactor installations and experimental facilities. You will join the Health Physics group, comprising 10 technicians, an engineer and a Head of Group. Your duties will be the following:
- Preparing operations involving the risk of irradiation and contamination and ensuring radiation protection for those involved (risk assessments as part of risk prevention plans and work authorisations)
- Taking radiological measurements in the installations, performing analyses and count rates in the effluents laboratory, and interpreting the results
- Periodically testing the proper functioning of the health physics instruments
- Performing basic repairs to the fixed or mobile health physics instruments
- Assisting with the provision of mandatory health physics training
- Assisting with dosimetry monitoring for ILL staff.
- Following a training period of around 10 months, you will be required to perform stand-by safety duties which are carried out outside the Institute's normal working hours.
For your information, the effluents laboratory operates based on the ISO 17025 standard. The measurements and sampling are carried out in accordance with this standard.
During the 2025-26 winter shutdown before you can perform stand-by safety duties, you may be required to work outside normal working hours in order to provide radioactivity monitoring for worksites.

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world and hosts over 2000 visits by scientists per year, who come to carry out world-class research.
The Health Physics, Safety and Environment Service (SRSE) is responsible for advising the Management Board on the application of current legislation and of the ILL's prevention policies in the areas of conventional safety and health physics. The role of the SRSE is to monitor and inspect the installations, whilst also providing the ILL's Divisions and Services with support for technical and regulatory matters. The Service is also responsible for environmental radiation monitoring and managing ILL's conventional and nuclear waste.
Your profile
- Level 4 qualification (NVQ, BTEC, HNC or equivalent) in health physics/radiation protection.
- At least two years' professional experience in a radioactive environment is desirable.
- Experience in a radioactivity measurements laboratory and experience in the use of the NF EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard would be appreciated.
- You have the ability to work both alone and in a team, with a sense of initiative and a methodical approach.
- You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French.
