Job Description

The Role

As Head of Health and Safety Delivery, you will lead a team of Health and Safety (H&S) professionals, fostering a culture of excellence in the delivery of H&S performance across United Utilities' (UU) operational and capital project activities. Your role will be pivotal in shaping and driving the successful implementation of H&S strategies that align with the company's overarching goals, ensuring high standards of safety throughout the organisation.

You will collaborate closely with key stakeholders, including the Chief Operating Officer and the Directors of Commercial, Engineering, and Capital Delivery, as well as the wider H&S leadership team. This partnership will ensure that specific risks within each business unit are clearly understood, enabling you to contribute to the development and implementation of targeted H&S plans. These plans will focus on sustainable improvements tailored to the unique risk profiles of each business area, while remaining aligned with UU's broader H&S strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate to develop and track H&S plans aligned with the UU H&S strategy, escalating concerns as needed.
  • Participate in leadership meetings and field visits to support the implementation of H&S policies, procedures, and improvement plans across all business areas.
  • Build strong relationships with operations and leadership teams to address H&S challenges, analyse data, and identify improvement opportunities, representing UU in the Water UK H&S Forum.
  • Provide H&S advice, coach managers on leadership behaviors, and ensure effective incident investigation and communication of lessons learned.
  • Mentor the H&S team, support their development, and contribute to the creation and execution of the UU H&S strategy and framework.

Skills & Experience:

  • Qualified to Degree and/or Health and Safety diploma level or equivalent skills, knowledge and experience.
  • Experience of leading and managing multi-disciplinary teams with the ability to identify/acquire talent and influence high-performance.
  • Detailed understanding of Health & Safety legislation and a provable track record of delivering sustained H&S performance improvement.
  • Demonstrable internal/external stakeholder management skills with experience influencing, coaching and negotiating with senior leadership.
  • Hold a current UK/EU driving licence.
