Job Description

Role: Interim Head of Communications
Location: Hybrid - 2/3 days a week in London
Contract: Maternity cover, fixed term - starting end of May beginning June
Sector: Charity/Non-profit

Salary: £62,000 - £69,000

Head of Communications (Maternity Cover, Fixed-Term Contract)

This is a wide-ranging role that covers both delivery and strategic direction. You will:

  • Lead and develop a multidisciplinary communications team (currently five staff plus freelancers and agencies)

  • Shape and deliver a refreshed communications strategy, aligned with a new organisational mission, vision and values

  • Oversee all communications channels-website, social media, digital, printed and visual content, press, events and internal comms

  • Manage a significant rebrand in partnership with a major funder, ensuring alignment with broader transformation goals

  • Act as a communications advisor to leadership, trustees, and partners, ensuring messaging is impactful, inclusive, and consistent

  • Develop key messages, brand language and tone of voice, and oversee internal comms that help embed change across the organisation

  • Manage the communications budget and supplier relationships, and track performance across channels

What They're Looking For

This role needs someone with both strategic depth and operational agility.

You'll be:

  • An experienced communications leader with a track record in delivering comms strategies and navigating change

  • Confident managing people, budgets, agencies, and complex projects with multiple moving parts

  • Skilled in leading rebrands and messaging work in complex environments

  • A clear, concise communicator who can simplify complexity across formats and audiences

  • Comfortable influencing and building relationships at all levels, internally and externally

  • A proactive and collaborative leader who can inspire a team and bring energy to day-to-day delivery

Desirable:

  • Experience in the voluntary or public sector, particularly with charities supporting vulnerable people

  • Experience working in a research and policy environment
