Job Description

About the role

East Devon District Council is committed to tackling poverty and this creative role plays an integral part in aiding the production of the Council s anti-poverty strategy. In this interesting and varied role, you will need to think outside the box and source ways to support people who are facing hardship and living in poverty. This will include accessing discretionary funding as appropriate and working in partnership with other organisations including Citizens Advice East Devon, Department for Works and Pensions, Housing Associations, food banks and community groups in the voluntary sector.

So, if you are an individual who is passionate about helping to address the underlying root causes of poverty and motivated to be part of building a solution that works for our resident s long term, we want to hear from you.

In return we can offer you a fantastic working environment in our purpose-built offices in Honiton, along with flexibility for homeworking. Working in a small but professional and dedicated team you will have access to excellent benefits including generous annual leave, flexitime, access to a Local Government Pension Scheme, and salary sacrifice cycle scheme. In addition, you ll be encouraged to take advantage of learning and development opportunities.

About you

With a good standard of education (GCSEs or equivalent), you will also ideally have knowledge of Welfare Benefits, Council Tax and debt recovery legislation as well as up to date knowledge of Housing, local and national policies, and the ability to review finances and budgets to help residents maximise income and minimise expenditure. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential to enable effective communication with a wide range of people, explaining complex legislation in a straightforward way and discussing sometimes difficult and sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy. You will need to be a team player and self-motivated to organise and manage your own workload whilst also possessing problem solving skills to enable you to find innovative and creative solutions to the issues and problems facing our residents.

A valid driving license and own car are essential (reasonable adjustments may be possible according to the Equality Act)

About us

Our recent Local Government Association Peer Challenge highlighted that EDDC is a great place to work, with engaged staff and members and that s certainly true! You will be part of a Gold Investors in People (IiP) organisation which works together with local people to create great value services and an outstanding community, economy and environment in which people want to live, work, visit and enjoy now, and for future generations. And with our wide range of health and wellbeing benefits, our highly flexible and collaborative hybrid Worksmart working arrangements as well as our commitment to continuous learning and development, you can be confident of joining a dedicated community of colleagues who are Happy, Healthy and Here.
