The Communication Workers Union:
The CWU is one of the top ten trade unions by size in the UK and is the biggest union for the communications industry with approximately 185,000 members.

The Department and Role:

  • The Finance Operations Manager works under the direction of the Senior Deputy General Secretary.
  • The SDGS Department forms part of the central administration function of the CWU. Financial operations within the department include accounts payable, branch administration, payroll and business expense claims.
  • The CWU is currently setting out a plan to restructure the organisation in order to make it fit for purpose to meet both the industrial and economic challenges we know we face.

Responsibilities of our Finance Operations Manager:

  • The role combines accounting, finance and management to prepare internal financial reports and provide insight into the Union's performance.
  • The postholder will track the union's income and expenditures and ensure statutory compliance as well as prepare forecasts, budgets and risk analysis as well as assist the SDGS in making financial decisions that affect the union by preparing analysis and reports to facilitate informed decision making.

What we are looking for in our Finance Operations Manager:

  • a qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA or equivalent) with a strong financial control background at a senior level.
  • an in-depth understanding of the management of finances in the not-for-profit sector
  • knowledge of tax, inland revenue policies and practices and compliance requirements.
  • a proven track record of implementing financial systems
  • experience of implementing solid governance and controls across the balance sheet
  • experience of implementing standardised reconciliation templates and processes
  • experience of producing key performance indicators
  • have proven experience of managing change
  • strong leadership and people management skills
