'Literature matters and is for everyone'
The Royal Society of Literature (RSL) is seeking to appoint a new Director who will play a key role in leading this iconic organisation into the future, while respecting the heritage of the RSL and its mission to 'nurture, celebrate and defend all that is best in British literature past and present'.
Founded in 1820 by George IV, the RSL is a charity which advances the cause of literature, supporting and honouring great writers. Core activities include a range of awards and prizes, an exciting annual programme of events, outreach work and the annual RSL Review. Fellowship of the RSL is a life-time honour. Fellows, elected by peers, are at the heart of the charity and make its work possible. This is an exciting time of transition and opportunity for the RSL as it opens a new chapter in its illustrious history.
The Director will be responsible for developing the strategy of the RSL, leading and managing the organisation and enabling the delivery of its mission. Reporting to the Chair and Council, they will, together with the President, act as an ambassador and the public face of the RSL, heightening its profile and representing its work to multiple and diverse audiences.
In the new Director, the RSL seeks an inspirational leader, with management experience. They do not need to come from the literary world but a keen interest in the value of the work of the RSL and its importance to writers will be vital. Knowledge of running a Charity will be an advantage and evidence of developing and delivering strategic, financial and operational plans will be essential, as will be the ability to work generously, thoughtfully and effectively with all those who engage with the RSL and with the experienced and committed staff. Understanding of fundraising and development will also be an advantage. The Board is seeking someone adaptable, combining the ability to work at a strategic level with an enthusiasm to roll up their sleeves when necessary.
The role provides a unique opportunity to help take this historic organisation into the future as a modern, diverse and forward-thinking Charity for future generations.
Closing date for applications: Monday 17 th March 2025.
