Job Description

Contract type: Permanent

Wellcome Collection is a free museum and library exploring health and human experience, where you can enjoy exhibitions, museum and library collections, public events, and a vibrant shop and café. We also publish books and online stories.

This is a great time to join Wellcome Collection as we embark on an exciting period of change. Wellcome Collection has recently introduced a new ten-year strategy and this role will play an important part in bringing to life our vision of a world where everyone's experience of health matters.

Wellcome Collection is part of Wellcome Trust, a global charitable foundation that supports science to build a healthier future for everyone. Wellcome Trust plans to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

These challenges need the bold science we support, but they won't be solved by science alone.

We are looking for a Digitisation Manager to join our team on a permanent basis.

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

The Digitisation Support Team is a core part of Wellcome Collection's Digital Production Team. This team looks after our end-to-end digitisation process.

You and your team will work closely with photographers, conservators and collections teams to deliver our ambitious digitisation aims. We currently digitise over 2 million images per year, plus audiovisual material, from across the range of our historic collections.

Digital Production is part of the Collections and Digital department in Wellcome Collection.

What will I be doing?

You will be leading the Digitisation Support Team comprised of four Digitisation Officers. This team plays a vital role in making our collections more accessible by scoping, scheduling and preparing collections for digitisation, tracking the movement of objects through the digitisation process, and ensuring digital outputs are available for access.

You will be responsible for the smooth running of several digitisation workflows including day-to-day oversight of two on-site suppliers, and one off-site supplier, who provide digitisation services. As an effective manager and coach, you will support the Digitisation Officers in managing rotas and workloads (including hybrid working at times), developing their professional practice, and maintaining good stakeholder relationships.

We are looking for someone who can:

  • Provide key input into the planning and prioritization cycle

  • Set realistic objectives for digitisation and ingest of digital assets and manage any change to those objectives

  • Clearly communicate our goals and targets to team members

  • Ensure all processes and policies are followed so that material is tracked, retrieved, stored and handled correctly, including effective data management procedures

  • Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.

Is this job for me?

You are someone who thrives on working in diverse and multidisciplinary teams. You will have a strong ethos of working in partnership with your teammates and colleagues to meet the team's objectives. We strongly welcome people with operational and strategic experience in managing workflows, processes and people to contribute to a larger effort.

We are looking for somebody who:

  • Has experience motivating a team through effective feedback and mutual ownership of the team's goals and expectations.

  • Is focused on creating an inclusive environment that allows all team members to thrive in their roles

  • Has experience with and an understanding of the challenges of working with historic materials

  • Is self-motivated and highly organized, and able to prioritise effectively

  • Is authentic and trustworthy, demonstrating good judgement

  • Has an interest in digital preservation and improving access to collections and, ideally, a good understanding of the end-to-end digitisation process.

To apply please upload your current CV and complete our short application.

Interview dates: Week commencing Monday, 14 October 2024
