Job Description

We're Europe's biggest conservation charity and we look after nature, beauty and history for everyone to enjoy.

The National Trust is seeking people to stand for election to the Trust's Council. The role is voluntary and unremunerated. Membership of the National Trust is a requirement for its Council members who must be over 18 years of age.

Applications are to be received no later than 12 noon on Monday 31 March 2025.

The Council plays an important role in how the Trust is governed. Its main responsibilities are to appoint the members of the Board of Trustees (our governing body) and to monitor and support their work.

The term of office for Council members is three years from November 2025, and Council members are able to stand for re-election to serve a maximum of three terms. The Council meet at least three times a year in person to debate key strategic issues and advise the Board of Trustees.

Council members also use their networks to grow support for the Trust among members and the wider public. It's a great opportunity to have your say and make sure the Trust fulfils its purpose as a charity. They discuss a wide range of subjects, from the coast and countryside to urban places and conservation. They also cover topics such as how we can inspire more people to care and take action, and to end unequal access to nature, beauty and history.

It's important to us that our Council reflects the breadth and diversity of our work, the nation we serve and the people who visit the special places we look after.

As part of the Council, you'd be expected to travel to some events. However, we'll cover your travel expenses, and you'll have the option to join some meetings virtually.
