Chair of the Board of Trustees - Wikimedia UK (Volunteer Role)
Wikimedia UK, the national charity for the global open knowledge movement including Wikipedia, is seeking a new Chair of the Board of Trustees to lead its governance and strategic oversight. As the outgoing Chair steps down, the charity is well-positioned with strong finances, a five-year strategic plan to 2030, experienced staff and secure core funding.
The Chair will provide leadership to a diverse and skilled Board, fostering effective collaboration with a professional executive team. Key responsibilities include chairing quarterly board meetings and the Annual General Meeting, ensuring robust governance practices, and acting as the main liaison with the Chief Executive. The role also involves supporting trustee recruitment and representing Wikimedia UK externally.
The ideal candidate will have significant leadership experience within the public, charitable, or nonprofit sectors and a strong understanding of charity governance, finance, and strategy. Excellent communication skills and a commitment to inclusivity, open knowledge, and the values of Wikimedia UK are essential. Experience in areas such as cultural heritage, education, or climate is desirable.
The commitment is around one day per month, with most meetings held online and some in-person engagements in London. Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. The new Chair will be appointed for an initial two-year term, with the expectation that this could be extended by mutual agreement.
