Job Description

Board Chair

£4,000pa

Barnsbury, Islington

A great opportunity to chair a small Housing Association

Barnsbury Housing Association (BHA) is a small neighbourhood-based housing association, formed in 1967 to provide genuinely affordable rented housing in Barnsbury, Islington. We are proud to combine our community roots with forward-thinking initiatives and our staff and board colleagues all share a real passion for the impact we make in our community.

Our purpose is simple yet powerful; to create sustainable homes and thriving communities.

We strive to ensure that our homes and estates are places where residents feel proud to live.

Our current Chair, Sean McLaughlin, will be stepping down in July after completing his full term, and we are seeking to appoint an exceptional individual to build on his legacy.

The Role

We are seeking a Chair who can lead and inspire the board with vision and creativity, while both staying true to our values and strengthening our engagement with the local community.

Our ideal candidate will make a meaningful contribution to shaping the future of BHA, so an understanding of the social housing sector and its current and future challenges, combined with a deep commitment to our purpose and values, is important.

You will be an influential leader who builds consensus, empowers others, and embodies personal integrity.

With a blend of executive and non-executive experience, you will bring strong business acumen, ambassadorial skills, and a deep understanding of governance, viability, and risk management.

A local connection to Islington or a passion for strengthening local communities and placemaking, would be highly valued.

Why Join BHA?

Whether you are an experienced Chair or stepping into the role for the first time, you will find a supportive and passionate team, dedicated to tackling challenges with creativity.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds who understand our mission and are willing to invest the time and commitment needed to make an impactful contribution to our board.

We are committed to an inclusive recruitment process and are happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments for candidates.

If this challenge appeals to you and you share our commitment to our mission, purpose and values, there is more detailed information available in the Candidate Brief which can be accessed at
