Job Description
Founded in 2012, Canal & River Trust is the UK's largest canal charity, caring for a 2,000-mile network of stunning canals and navigable rivers across England and Wales. Its purpose is to achieve a sustainable future for the nation's canal network, keeping it open and alive, making it resilient and safe, and maximising its value for people, nature and the economy. Built over 200 years ago, the network is the largest and oldest collections of working industrial heritage in the UK.

We work for nature, for our heritage, and for people by creating living waterways that transform places and enrich lives. We safeguard the waterways for now and for the future, and in so doing we help make life better for millions of people across England and Wales.

The Trust is led on a day to day basis by the Executive and is governed by the Board of Trustees who provide, amongst other things, significant strategic and governance counsel to the Executive. Trustees play a vital role in supporting and empowering the Executive through their independent expertise. As three of our longstanding Trustees come to the end of their terms later this year we are seeking between two and four exceptional individuals to join the Board and continue to uphold the vital and broad work of the Trust.

Given the scale and wide scope of the Trust's work, we are interested in candidates who would offer a breadth of perspective and expertise to the Board.

We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates from diverse backgrounds and from those with a passion and enthusiasm for canals and their benefits for nature, for heritage, and for people.

In addition to candidates who offer a breadth of expertise, we would be interested to identify candidates with expertise in charities and fundraising, and those with technical experience notably in engineering and delivery of major infrastructure projects.

Our community of around 35,000 boaters make a vital contribution to the quality of our waterways, and we would welcome interest from candidates with boating experience.

One of our incoming Trustees will be asked to sit on the Audit Committee and, although we are not seeking a chartered accountant, we would particularly welcome applications from those who demonstrate a good understanding of risk and/ or experience of serving on audit committees.

We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates from diverse backgrounds with a genuine passion and enthusiasm for the waterway and the belief in the work of the Trust for nature, for heritage, and for people.
