Senior Safety Engineer - Mechanical

Location: RG7 4PR, located between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking. Due to the classified nature of the work involved, there are limited opportunities to work from home in this role. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will spend the majority of their time working on site at AWE Aldermaston.

Package: £47,690 - £70,000 (depending on your suitability, qualifications, and level of experience)

Let us introduce the role

AWE is now recruiting for a Senior Mechanical Safety Engineer to become a member of our Mechanical Safety Team, within our Engineering Safety Organisation, who provide complex professional engineering judgement for the effective implementation of technical engineering safety.

You'll be responsible for the following:

  • Setting, managing, and assessing standards of competence for Mechanical Engineering Safety Appointed people such as Authorised Persons and Nominated Persons.

  • Reviewing suitability of Mechanical safe systems of work for maintenance delivery by AWE and contract personnel for compliance with relevant regulations.

  • The review legislative records pertaining to engineering safety.

  • Providing advice on the safe and effective implementation of engineering safety and making judgement on the safe and effective implementation of engineering safety within area of authority.

  • Having oversite of supply chain's specialist contractors application of engineering safety when delivering tasks.

  • Providing technical support in resolving complex and multifaceted issues across the business.

  • Supporting the development and efficient operation of the Engineering Safety Organisation.

Whilst not to be considered a tick list, we'd like you to have experience in the following:

  • Strong mechanical engineering background with an engineering/mechanical-related qualification (Level 4/HNC/HND) or equivalent suitable experience.

  • Good understanding of PUWER, LOLER, PSSR, and associated inspection and maintenance requirements.

  • Conversant in relevant British Standards and Industry Standards.

  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of maintaining mechanical building services, HVAC systems, industrial gas systems.

  • Preferably held or holds an Authorising Engineer / Authorised Person appointment (AUENG/MS1/AP11/APMPS or equivalent).

  • The ability to deliver engineering across an equivalent manufacturing and/or research environment comprising a range of infrastructure facilities and associated manufacturing and/or research plant and equipment.

  • Experience of working on large civil construction projects - desirable.

  • Experience of identifying, managing and reporting on engineering safety risks to senior management.

  • Previous experience of leading the delivery of engineering services across the life of an asset.

  • You will need to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role. This will be funded by AWE. The nature of our work does mean you need to be a British Citizen who has been resident in the UK for the past 5 years in order to apply for SC clearance and 10 years for DV.
