Job Description

Senior Director, Communications

Salary: £129,966 per annum

Location: London

The CMA exists to protect the market conditions for competitive, fair-dealing businesses to innovate and thrive, so people can be confident they are getting great choices and fair deals, and so the whole UK economy can grow productively and sustainably. We are deeply committed to this work, which is intellectually stimulating, often high-profile and continually evolving.

This an exciting time to be at the CMA as our responsibilities evolve and we adapt to meet far-reaching changes in our external operating environment. Alongside our existing powers and responsibilities (for merger control, markets, competition and consumer law enforcement), we also now provide advice on government subsidies and the UK's internal market. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumer Act 2024 will empower our Digital Markets Unit to oversee a pro-competition regulatory regime for the most powerful digital firms.

The CMA offers a unique opportunity to make a real impact on millions of people and businesses every day. The work we do receives increasingly strong external recognition and is often high-profile, both in the UK and globally. In helping to drive it forward, you will be collaborating with, and learning from, some of the finest minds in the competition and consumer protection world.

The Communications Unit is part of the SCA Directorate which sits at the heart of the CMA, working across the organisation on a wide range of high-profile cases and projects. The Communications Unit plays a critical role for the CMA, promoting understanding of the organisation and our impact clearly and effectively across the whole of the UK.

As Senior Director Communications, you will lead and oversee multiple functions within the CMA's Communications Unit which include: Media; Digital; Strategic Communications; Stakeholder Engagement (and within this, Events). You will leverage these functions to strengthen understanding of the CMA and its purpose, ensuring this is well understood by key audiences to maximise the overall impact of the CMA's work.

To be successful in this role, you will be a highly experienced, forward-thinking strategic leader and an outstanding communicator with a credible and persuasive presence in political, business and media circles. You will be used to deploying negotiation, communication, and influencing skills at the most senior levels to achieve desired results. You will have experience, ideally in the Public sector, in each of the function areas which comprise the Communications unit, with a track record of providing measurable insights as to the effectiveness of where you have employed these in the past. You will have a proven ability to bring together, inspire and lead diverse high-performing teams to deliver effectively and to grow their skills and expertise, including leveraging digital tools and technologies to do so.

This is an exceptional opportunity to play a unique strategic and operational leadership role in an ambitious and purpose driven organisation at a time of significant change.

In return, we can offer you a competitive benefits package that includes a generous contributory pension scheme, 25 days of annual leave rising to 30 after 5 years' service (plus 8 public holidays) and a range of extras such as parental leave, season ticket and bicycle loans. With flexible working arrangements so that you can seamlessly blend your career and lifestyle, you will find much to enjoy at the Competition and Markets Authority.
