Network Engineer - SC/DV - Permanent

A specialist technical consultancy and partner of the MOD are looking to add a Network Engineer to their dynamic DevOps Infrastructure team. This is a role that affords interesting project work and excellent career development.

In this role, you will design, implement, and maintain secure, complex network solutions, including the installation, configuration, and management of multi-vendor hardware such as Switches, Routers, and Firewalls.

Role Responsibilities

Key responsibilities for this role may include:

Network Design and Implementation:

  • Design and deploy scalable, secure, and resilient network solutions, including LAN, WAN, and wireless networks.
  • Implement network infrastructure changes, upgrades, and expansions in line with business needs and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate with architects, system engineers, and other stakeholders to integrate network solutions with existing and new systems.

Network Maintenance and Optimisation:

  • Monitor network performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement solutions to optimise speed, reliability, and security.
  • Conduct regular network maintenance tasks, including updates, patches, and configuration changes, to ensure optimal network health.
  • Perform network audits and assessments, recommending improvements to enhance performance and security.

Troubleshooting and Support:

  • Diagnose and resolve complex network issues, ensuring minimal downtime and disruption to business operations.
  • Provide tier-2 and tier-3 support for network-related incidents, working closely with IT support teams to address issues promptly.
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation of network configurations, changes, and troubleshooting steps.

Security and Compliance:

  • Implement and enforce network security policies, including Firewalls, VPNs, and access controls, to protect against unauthorised access and threats.
  • Ensure network solutions comply with relevant regulations and industry standards, such as ISO 27001, GDPR, and others.
  • Respond to network security incidents, conducting post-incident reviews and implementing improvements.

Network Infrastructure Management:

  • Manage network hardware and software, including Routers, Switches, Firewalls, and network management tools.
  • Oversee the procurement and deployment of network equipment, ensuring compatibility and scalability.
  • Maintain inventory and life cycle management of network devices, planning for upgrades and replacements as needed.

Collaboration and Continuous Improvement:

  • Work closely with other IT teams, including systems, security, and support, to ensure seamless integration and operation of the network.
  • Stay up to date with the latest networking technologies, trends, and best practices, recommending and implementing improvements.
  • Participate in training and development programs to enhance your skills and knowledge in networking and related areas.

Edcuation & Experience

As the Network Engineer, you will have:

  • Relevant certifications (eg, CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+, Juniper Networks) are highly desirable.
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Network Engineering, or a related field is desirable but not essential.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in network engineering, with a proven track record of designing, implementing, and managing complex network infrastructures.
  • Experience with enterprise-grade networking hardware and software from vendors such as Cisco, Palo Alto, Dell, or similar.
  • Direct experience with routing protocols (eg, OSPF, BGP), network security technologies (eg, Firewalls, VPNs), and wireless networking.
  • Strong understanding of network protocols, IP Addressing, subnetting, and VLANs.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex network issues quickly and effectively.
  • Proficiency in network monitoring and management tools, such as SolarWinds, Wireshark, and others.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
