Job Description

Department: Design Engineering

Reports to (Job Title): Engineering Manager/Senior Engineer

Job family, track and Level: Engineering and Technical, Specialist and Level 3

Need: Autodash Inventor, Mechanical Design Experience & Solid works and Autocad.

Accountability

Level Summary Roles at this level apply their technical expertise when carrying out a range of project activities to support the development and implementation of engineering/technical solutions. Roles at this level are expected to deliver work to defined standards of quality, accuracy and timeliness, supporting the team to develop and deliver required outputs. Roles may be either individual contributors, acting as lead technicians or engineers, or they may act as supervisors with limited line management responsibility for technicians and/or apprentices.

Responsibilities:

  • Carry out the function of Mechanical Design Engineer including but not limited to:
    • Collaborating across Engineering Functions, including Electrical and manufacturing
    • Ensuring design solutions are tolerant of the environment in which they operate.
    • To identify opportunities to reduce costs in design, materials used and manufacturing techniques.
    • Work effectively across the Matrix and deliver bottom-line performance collaboratively.
    • Challenge the status quo, bring new ideas to improve engineering quality, productivity and timeliness of delivery
    • Work to standards, processes & procedures, ensure rigour, resilience and continuous improvement in design solutions, meeting all regulatory requirements, conforming to specifications, quality and certification requirements.
    • Design products that are safe and meet all statutory requirements.
    • To produce, amend and check drawings and Items lists and release them for use by other departments in line with department processes.
    • To demonstrate flair, novel solutions to design problems using latest technologies and have input to design processes to reduce project/product cost and time to market.

Tasks:

A piece of work to be done within the responsibility of the role. Carry out drawing modifications and amendments as and when required.

  • Work with colleagues, assisting with potential quality issues through production.
  • Be able to hold DFMA's with manufacturing and production.
  • Experience of designing to cost, manufacture and assembly, knowledge of drawing systems and product Structures.
  • Controlling product, build standard, drawing and document configuration control.
  • Assist purchasing with technical queries and release advance purchase requisitions.
  • Resolve design queries and Inspection reports, including technical solutions to warranty issues.

Technical Competencies:

- Proficient with Autodesk Inventor

- Ideally proficient with Windchill PLM with experience in populating Part attributes, building Part structures, raising and completing Change Requests, Change Notices and Change Tasks.

- Good IT skills, including Word and Excel.

Education:

- Essential to be qualified to degree level in Engineering or Apprenticeship and sufficient experience in the field.

- Desirable to have made progress towards achieving Chartered status or equivalent professional accreditation

Experience:

- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with energy and enthusiasm to all levels within and without the business.

- The ability to apply your skills and knowledge across a wide and diverse range of projects.

- Sound understanding of product safety and standards.

- Experienced with working to requirements.

- Broad understanding of manufacturing techniques including, sheet metal fabrication, riveting, bonding and welding.

- Good communication skills.

- Ability to work accurately and at pace.

- Ability to provide technical advice/challenge based on facts and information.

- Demonstrated effectiveness in using professional or technical expertise to make decisions and provide guidance to colleagues.

- Ability to communicate/present complex information concisely and to a non-technical audience.

- Meticulous attention to detail and strong problem solving skills.
