HEAD OF PE

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly motivated Head of PE to lead a successful and supportive team in a highly aspirational and well-established department. This post provides an excellent opportunity for an experienced PE Teacher to develop their career who will be required to teach PE across KS3 and KS4, and all ability ranges. You will also be responsible for the management of effective and efficient teaching and learning support in key areas of the school. You will conduct regular meetings, professional development and coaching with staff, setting targets and improving performance.
Responsibilities:
Key Tasks
• To provide leadership that ensures effective teaching and learning in the PE Department.
• To ensure effective delivery of the National Curriculum PE in KS3 and KS4.
• To be responsible for the coordination, organisation and administration of the PE Department.
LEADERSHIP OF THE DEPARTMENT
• To provide the vision that will lead the PE Department.
• To lead, by example, the work of the PE team and the students.
• To ensure the good learning of all students in the PE Department.
• To identify, monitor and ensure good academic progress of all the students in the PE Department.
• To complete the Department SEF (Self evaluation form) annually.
• To maintain and update the Department Improvement Plan (DIP) to ensure it is aligned with whole school priorities.
EFFECTIVE DELIVERY OF NATIONAL CURRICULUM KS3 AND KS4
• To ensure that all requirements for National Curriculum in PE programmes are met.
• To ensure that there is pace, challenge and progress in all PE lessons.
• To implement good procedures for lesson preparation, homework and the setting of work for all absent staff so as to ensure continuity.
• To allocate resources and ensure their effective use.
• To ensure that students are effective in their learning and make good progress.
• To ensure that assessment is implemented in line with the school's Assessment Policy.
• To ensure a good learning environment that supports effective work in all PE areas.
• To spread good practice in teaching methodology through observations, discussion and developmental initiatives for the PE Department.
• To regularly monitor the work of the PE Department.
• To ensure innovative use is made of IT in PE lessons.
• To successfully develop and integrate the KS3 literacy strategy within the PE Department
• To lead and support delivery of remote learning as required.
Experience:
• To have experience of working effectively within a team and playing a motivating role
• To have experience of teaching PE at KS3 and either KS4 or KS5
• To have teaching experience in a culturally diverse secondary school
• To have experience of implementing teaching interventions and evaluating their effectiveness
• To have experience of taking a lead role in departmental initiatives
Qualifications and Training:
• To have a degree in PE or a related subject
• To be a qualified teacher (PGCE or equivalent) with QTS
• To have a good standard of general education including GCSE Maths and English
Knowledge and Skills:
• To understand the requirements of the National Curriculum for PE BTEC
• To have an awareness of relevant health and safety regulations and policies
• To have good ICT skills
• To have excellent communication and literacy skills (both oral and in writing) - the ability to make points clearly and confidently, providing information and advice in accurate spoken English, and able to understand the views of others
• The ability to prioritise own time, work under pressure and meet deadlines with a sense of balance and perspective
• To be able to adapt work effectively so that all students can access lesson content and make good progress
