Are you looking for a new challenge, working in a small team with the flexibility to work across a range of high-profile issues? If so, we'd love to hear from you!
The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) provides official independent forecasts of the economy and public finances to inform the Government's fiscal policy decisions. We examine the impact of the Government's policy decisions on the public finances, and assess the prospects for achieving thier targets and welfare cap.
About the role
We are recruiting a Fiscal Analyst to support our work scrutinising parts of the spending forecast, in particular departmental spending. The post-holder would sit in our spending team and would also work with the policy costings team on departmental spending aspects of policies. Specific responsibilities will shift between forecasts and other OBR outputs, depending on business need and with the opportunity to reflect the post-holder's interests.
We also get involved in a wide range of projects, such as leading on the analysis for fiscal risks associated with fluctuating energy prices and geopolitical tensions, and providing a range of working papers, briefing papers and OBR articles.
About the job
This is a flexible role and you will be able to tailor it to your interests and development needs. The core responsibilities include:
- Lead the co-ordination of departmental spending information received from HM Treasury.
- Contribute to scrutiny, analysis, and reporting of departmental spending forecasts in the Economic and fiscal outlook and Fiscal risks and sustainability reports .
- Coordinate the process for collecting inputs from contributors to the public spending forecast and managing relationships with collaborators to ensure the forecast process runs smoothly.
- Contribute to the quality assurance and challenge of spending forecast returns.
- Support the OBR's policy costings team on analysis of departmental spending.
- Contribute to the OBR's wider analytical programme, our core and ad-hoc publications (e.g. Forecast evaluation report and working papers), and relevant content on our website.
This role is likely to require some out-of-hours and weekend working in the weeks ahead of a forecast. We do look to accommodate a range of working patterns and provide flexibilities so we would encourage candidates to discuss this with the hiring manager.
What you will bring to the role
Our successful candidate will have an undergraduate degree in an analytical subject, or similar on-the-job experience strong analytical skills, with a broad understanding of the medium- and long-term economic and fiscal issues facing the UK.
