Job Description

This role is your opportunity to be a first board member and meaningful key leader. As the finance professional in a small but fairly autonomous executive leadership team who enjoy accountability for growing a successful business, you will expand our sphere of responsibility in further business growth setting the agenda for the sector. A non-traditional role, this is a big step forward for someone who is commercially minded and highly strategic, and who can combine a sense of fun to add to the fascinating experience that is Ubico.

About Ubico

With a turnover of £54.1m and 1,000 staff, Ubico is a leading provider of sustainable and environmental services for the public sector - we've grown rapidly to cover over 1,200 square miles of Gloucestershire and West Oxfordshire. We're friendly, ambitious and passionate, and we have a big responsibility; we help to keep the spaces and places where people live, work and visit clean, green and tidy, delivering quality services to impact positively on the individuals and communities we serve.

Your role

You will take overall accountability for Finance and the corporate functions of Business Development, Intelligence & Performance, and strategic Project Management, as well as fulfilling the role of company secretary. As a full member of the board, you will be a leading participant on the executive leadership team - contributing directly to setting the company's purpose, values, strategy and vision and ensuring they are delivered.

We have strong and well-established operations within Finance and our corporate functions. Your focus will be on the strategic aspects of finance, including overseeing major contract management and procurement activity. We want you to translate financial strategy into effective delivery, striving to ensure financial stability, and embedding a business partnering approach to achieving our mission. You will make your mark through:

  • ongoing strategic management of the company's finances including the production and signing of Ubico's annual accounts.
  • ensuring the provision of accurate, transparent and timely financial information.
  • ensuring commercial bids, proposals and business cases are accurate and financially viable.
  • leading innovation and transformational change, in a culture of continuous improvement.
  • building relationships with shareholding councils, internal and external stakeholders, potential clients and the wider business network.
  • exploring opportunities to deliver efficiencies, growth or commercial returns.

Our head office is in Cheltenham, but the role requires regular travel across the company's operating area to visit depots and offices. You will need a full driving licence and use of a vehicle with appropriate insurance in place.

Your profile

  • Professionally qualified in accountancy and finance (company secretary qualification desirable).
  • Experienced strategist, with demonstrable skills in developing and delivering business, change and growth strategies.
  • Consistent track record of developing financial strategies and translating them into effective operational delivery plans.
  • Substantial experience of leading financial planning, budget preparation and control, financial risk assessment, management and resolution, statutory accounting, financial systems and control, in a (financially) large and complex organisation.
  • Experience of working and succeeding in complex partnership arrangements, demonstrating effective stakeholder management, partnership working, networking and collaboration.
  • Demonstrable communication, leadership, coaching and mentoring skills, including the ability to inspire teams and colleagues, and promote organisational vision and values.
  • Strong management skills, with the ability to lead and influence others, make informed decisions and build and maintain successful relationships and networks.

The Ubico community are a family who respect, support and help each other. Our culture and behaviours are guided by our shared values.
