Data Engineer - Manchester

As a Data Engineer, You'll join the Trips Business Unit, working alongside curious, energetic, and focused professionals. You will play a key role in delivering our vision to build a fully integrated, scalable, high-performance, and compliant data platform and pipelines.

Your responsibility includes roadmapping and implementing replacements for existing ad-hoc data solutions, establishing a strong foundation using modern technologies and best practices. This will enable the production of large volumes of high-quality data for seamless consumption and analysis.

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will:

Coach and mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of learning and growth.

Act as a thought leader within the team, ensuring best practices are implemented effectively.

Responsibilities

Data Engineering

  • Work with business users to model and implement scalable, secure, and well-governed data pipelines using standardized tools and procedures.

  • Diagnose and solve data pipeline issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement enhancements to prevent recurrence.

  • Ensure end-to-end data quality in core datasets and pipelines, engaging with teams to resolve data quality issues.

  • Maintain data accessibility, integrity, and governance while supporting rapid product development.

  • Advocate for data security, governance, and best practices across teams.

  • Contribute to best practices, architectural principles, and quality standards for data engineering.

  • Experiment with new technologies to drive engineering excellence.

  • Design, build, test, and support high-quality code following best practices and testing techniques.

  • Participate in recruitment efforts, including interviewing and onboarding.

End-to-End System Ownership

  • Collaborate with teams to ensure proper data cataloging, governance, life cycle management, and quality standards.

  • Support data analysts by assisting with complex data mining, analysis, and profiling.

  • Reduce business risks by leveraging modern tools, writing documentation, and maintaining runbooks and operational guides.

Architectural Guidance

  • Provide technical guidance to teams to ensure solutions align with functional, non-functional, and architectural requirements.

  • Challenge and refine application designs within the broader architectural landscape.

Critical Thinking

  • Identify patterns and underlying issues in complex situations by applying logical and analytical thinking to find effective solutions.

Coaching & Mentorship

  • Guide and support colleagues at all levels by sharing experience, knowledge, and best practices to enhance team performance.

Process & Quality Improvement

  • Identify opportunities for process, system, and performance improvements by evaluating current workflows.

  • Design and implement improvements through new standards, workflows, and practices to enhance business performance.

Effective Communication

  • Deliver clear, well-structured, and meaningful information to target audiences using appropriate communication styles.

  • Adapt messaging to achieve mutually agreeable solutions and foster collaboration.

  • Utilize active listening techniques to fully understand and engage with discussions.

Skills & Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience building big data pipelines in distributed environments using Kafka, Hadoop, Spark, Python, and DBT.

  • Strong data modelling skills (Dimensional, Data Vault).

  • Passion for Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery, and Agile methodologies.

  • Solid understanding of security principles and secure coding practices.

  • Experience working on large-scale, well-governed, and compliant systems.

  • Proven ability to lead, guide, and mentor team members technically and procedurally.

  • Familiarity with basic analytics and machine learning concepts.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Understanding of cloud security best practices.

  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred).

  • Educational background: Relevant degree or equivalent experience.
