Your new role
The Chartered Structural Engineer will be responsible for coordinating the structural design of building structures from inception to the completion of construction. You will be responsible to overseeing design work on various materials and liaising with the architects and other members of the designing team.
Main Responsibilities of a Chartered Structural Engineer:
• Design of structures in reinforced concrete, structural steel, timber, and masonry.
• Conceptual design, involving choice of appropriate materials and method of analysis.
• Supervision and management of a team of engineers and technicians in detailed design, to set time budgets.
• Preparation of project specifications, involving use of both standard specifications prepared by external agencies and in-house specifications.
• Attendance at design team meetings, site meetings and client consultations.
• Organising Site Investigations by trial pit and borehole.
• Preparation of piling and steelwork subcontracts.
• Monitoring construction.
• Inspection and reporting on structural defects in buildings.
• Operation of procedures in accordance with the firm's quality system.
• Prepare the designer's input for the Health & Safety plan for projects and issue it to the Planning Supervisor.
• Following the requisite training, fulfil the role of independent Planning Supervisor
What you'll need to succeed
We are looking for a Chartered Structural Engineer with membership in either the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Institution of Structural Engineers, preferably both. The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 5 years of post-graduation experience, including 3 years of design office experience in building structures and site experience as Resident Engineer or with a contractor. Knowledge of the JCT Form of contract and Quality Assurance systems and quality management is essential, along with experience of working in multidisciplinary design teams and implementing Safety Plans in accordance with CDM Regulations.
The candidate should be familiar with Microsoft Office Suite - Excel and Word and have an awareness of recent developments in engineering design and research. Strong analytical and numerical skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to use initiative in problem-solving are a must. The candidate should also be able to prioritise tasks and manage projects using imagination, drive and enthusiasm.
The ideal candidate for the Chartered Structural Engineer should possess good negotiation and interpersonal skills, be able to work on their own initiative as well as part of a team, be client-focused, and have good organisational skills to ensure deadlines are met. The candidate should also be safety conscious and maintain confidentiality.
