Job Description

Durham is one of the world's great and most distinctive universities. Our history as a centre of learning goes back over a thousand years. Founded in 1832, we are England's third oldest university. A globally outstanding centre of teaching and research excellence, housed within a collegiate community of extraordinary people in a unique and historic setting - Durham is an exceptional and highly attractive institution.

To take up post in August 2025, we seek a Chair to lead Council at a time of opportunity and challenge for global higher education, as the University responds to changing political, economic, social and technological conditions. The Chair of Council will commit time, energy and skills to support the University in reaching its goals and will bring experience in leading organisations through change and innovation.

Candidates will have gained experience as a senior executive in organisations of significant scale and complexity before taking on non-executive roles, ideally as a chair of a board or a major committee. With a record of encouraging bold thinking and guiding strategic decision making, you will have an open, transparent and non-hierarchical approach. Representing Durham at University and public engagements, you will have high levels of personal and professional credibility and integrity, and be committed to the University's values, aims and objectives.

You will demonstrate a strong intellect with independence of mind and judgement; an enthusiasm and willingness to engage with corporate initiatives; empathy for student needs and willingness to engage with student groups; and superb communication and relationship building skills, to gain the respect of Durham's community.

The closing date for expressions of interest is Friday 22 nd November 2024.
