Chair - Financial Services Consumer Panel

Remuneration £50,000 per annum, Time commitment c. 104 days per annum

Three Year Term

Location: National

The purpose of the Financial Services Consumer Panel (the Panel) is to provide an independent consumer perspective and act as a 'critical friend' to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) on its policies and practices to help the FCA to deliver its strategic and operational objectives. The emphasis of its work is on the areas of work the FCA prioritises each year, although the Panel does have scope to consider the impact on consumers of activities that are not regulated but are related to the FCA's general duties.

Its vision is to make markets work well for consumers and for consumers to be protected from harm, by influencing the development of financial services policy and regulation. The Chair of the Financial Services Consumer Panel will lead the strategic direction and development of the Panel to ensure the voice of the consumer is heard for consumers, SMEs and microbusinesses across all of society, especially those with vulnerable characteristics and ensure the Panel focusses where it can have the most impact.

This is an exciting time to join the Panel and contribute to decision-making and regulatory outcomes that have significant real-world impacts on consumers. We welcome interest from applicants with high-level leadership and chairing experience and an informed understanding of complex financial services issues and consumer issues, including the needs of different types of consumers in this area. Applicants will bring demonstrable experience of working under close public scrutiny and the gravitas to communicate effectively with FCA and other stakeholders at all levels, including the FCA Chair, CEO and Executive Directors. An understanding of the role played by regulation coupled with strong relationship building skills with decision making bodies and the ability to prioritise will be very useful in this Chair role. Strong personal values and principles, which align with those of the FCA, and an unwavering commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion will underpin the skills and attributes needed for this role.

Panel meetings will take place virtually or in person, with members expected to attend a limited number of in-person Panel meetings during the year at the FCA's offices in Stratford. Appointments are made by the FCA Board and are subject to approval by HM Treasury. Successful candidates should expect to commit around 104 days per annum and will be eligible for a fee of £50,000 per annum.

As part of the disability confident scheme, the FCA guarantees to interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria.
