Job Description

We are a not-for-profit organisation committed to increasing the diversity and numbers of young people entering engineering and technology to meet the future workforce needs, as well as promoting roles that help us work towards net zero and drive environmental sustainability.

We are looking for passionate and committed individuals whose interests align with our goals. We would like them to bring a good understanding of the current experiences and perceptions of young people - this could be because the candidate is young themselves and/or it could be that they have a good understanding of young people through, for example, working in education, research, or outreach.

You'll be an effective communicator and be committed to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Our mission is to enable more young people from all backgrounds to be informed, inspired and progress into engineering and technology.

In the UK, we don't have enough engineers and demand is going up. So, we need more young people to realise there could be a future for them in engineering and technology. To really thrive, we need a stronger, more diverse and representative workforce and for that we have to do things differently to make engineering more appealing.

We are a not-for-profit working with hundreds of organisations across business, education, professional institutions and the third sector so we can all grow the future talent pool together. We drive that collective effort through research and evidence, leadership, activities for schools and advocacy, with a focus on long-term sustainability.

About the role

The Engineering and Technology Board, trading as EngineeringUK, is an independent, not-for-profit organisation which works on behalf of the UK engineering community to enable more young people from all backgrounds to be informed, inspired and progress into engineering and technology. We are privileged to receive a share of the registration fees of professionally registered engineers and technicians (alongside the Engineering Council) and our work is also supported by 34 Corporate Members as well as hundreds of other funders of our activities. We drive that collective effort through research and evidence, leadership, activities for schools and advocacy, with a focus on long-term sustainability. EngineeringUK has a vacancy for an independently-appointed member of its Board of Trustees.

EngineeringUK's Board provides governance oversight and direction to the charity, alongside support and constructive challenge. As a Board member you will be part of the drive to increase the number and diversity of young people choosing academic and vocational pathways into engineering, a varied, stimulating and valuable career that's at the heart of the UK leading in innovation and addressing Net Zero. You'll be part of an organisation that works in partnership and aims to grow the collective impact of work across the sector to help young people understand what engineering is, how to get into it, and be motivated and able to access the educational and training opportunities on the way.

Responsibilities/Commitment

Board members are expected to attend four half-day meetings and an away day per year in London/online and to prepare for these meetings by reading papers circulated in advance.

Board members are encouraged to contribute more widely where possible, including on formal and informal sub-committees or in ad-hoc discussions relating to specific initiatives.

This is an unpaid role, but reasonable travel and subsistence costs will be reimbursed. The successful candidate will be appointed for an initial four-year term, which is extendable for a second four-year term
