Job Description

This role has a starting salary of £35,730 per annum, based on a 36-hour working week.

We are excited to be hiring a new Senior Youth Engagement Officer to join our fantastic Surrey Fire and Resue Service. The role is contractually based at Service Headquarters, Reigate, with expectation and opportunity for agile working, including working from a variety of locations, such as other SCC offices, fire stations or from home.

About the RoleAt Surrey Fire and Rescue Service we are putting prevention at the heart of our Service, and we are looking for a Senior Youth Engagement Officer who is ready for the challenge of positively engaging with young people in our communities who need more support and opportunities; helping identified young people to improve their personal resilience and achievement through practical interventions and supporting them to achieve a qualification and improve their futures.

The Senior Youth Engagement Officer role is key to co-ordinating and delivering our current Youth Engagement Scheme (YES); leading a team in engaging with young people at risk of exclusion from school, supporting them to achieve personal resilience goals through a 5-day programme of fire service inspired activities. You will also support other managers in the wider team and service in the delivery of Firewise through working with children that set fires.

The role is an opportunity to both deliver and further develop our existing youth engagement scheme as well as to collaborate on the development, delivery and evaluation of new youth engagement offers including RISE (Resilience, Inspire, Skills, Empower) in line with the NFCC's Early Intervention framework and the Prince's Trust requirements. You will ensure that children and young people are Safeguarded at all times, following and implementing Service Safeguarding and Health and Safety policies and practices, alongside promoting and delivering youth work practice that is pro-social, restorative, trauma informed, is strengths based and develops protective factors.

Shortlisting CriteriaTo be considered for shortlisting for this position, your application will clearly evidence the following:

  • Ability to co-ordinate people from a variety of teams, fostering positive relationships with team members
  • Ability to build rapport with young people and their families as well as with Service managers, personnel, and with partner agencies in Surrey especially referrers
  • A suitable youth work or teaching qualification or demonstrable equivalent experience, know how children and young people learn and have an awareness of protective factors, trauma informed, restorative and pro-social practices
  • Experience of co-ordinating people, delivering activities to young people and evaluating the outcomes or can evidence the potential to do so
  • Excellent communications skills, verbal and written
  • Ability to use information technology effectively, including databases, spreadsheets and Microsoft Office 365
